Throughout its long history, since its founding 170 years ago, the philosophy of these craftsmen has been respectfully preserved and passed down from generation to generation.
Long ago, the mountain cherry tree had the same name as the birch tree: Kaba. That is why cherry bark work is called Kabazaiku, or "birch work". Our craftsmen use the most natural materials and always strive to let the wood express itself in their work. Our Kabazaiku series is not only functional but also elegant, to decorate your table.
Cherry barkCherry bark is an eco-friendly material as it will regrow after being harvested. Cherry bark ware mainly have two different kinds of finishes: the one is Marble, that retains the appearance of the raw bark ; the other is Natural, whose surface is thinly scraped to a polish. The surfaces of tea caddies will grow more lustrous the more you handle them. Sakura (cherry) is a very important symbol in Japan.
Cherry trees blossom between the end of March and the end of April, from the south to the north of Japan. During this period, the Japanese like to do "O Hanami", a tradition of contemplating the cherry blossoms and enjoying the arrival of spring.
This tradition, which is very active today, is also a time for conviviality. People go out for picnics with family, friends and colleagues, eating, drinking, chatting and singing under the cherry blossoms.
Most Japanese prefer the period when the petals begin to fall like snow in the wind, rather than the peak blooming period, to remind us of the fragility of an ephemeral, rare and slightly sad beauty.
In Japan, the start of the new school year takes place in April, as does the arrival of new recruits at the company. Entrance and graduation ceremonies are always accompanied by sakura, and to welcome new employees, bosses often organize O Hanami with the whole team. A great way to socialize!
These magnificent cherry blossoms are not only to be admired, but also enjoyed, in the form of desserts and drinks. The most popular Japanese sakura dessert is sakura mochi (sakura-scented rice cake).
